Start of a New Lionistic Year
The end of June saw the start of a new year in Newbury Lions.
Retiring President Peter Wood handed over to New President Judith Colby and a new team of officers. We are also pleased to say one of our members Colin Mansell has become Zone President for our region!
Judith says
‘It is a great honour to serve as President of Newbury Lions Club and I am looking forward to the year ahead. Newbury Lions have been serving the local community for 50 years and we continue to do so despite these strange times. Although we have had to cancel all our fundraising activities, including our annual Fireworks Display at Newbury Racecourse, we will continue to support those in need wherever we can.’
One thing we would like to highlight at the beginning of this year is our ‘Message in a bottle’ scheme, especially for those who are vulnerable and may live alone.
More than 6 million Message in a Bottle kits have been distributed by Lions Clubs British Isles in recent years to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities, and life-threatening illnesses.
Message in a Bottle kits are supplied by local clubs to members of the public, as well as to health centres, doctors’ surgeries, and chemists.
The Message in a Bottle kit includes a form, where personal and medical information is detailed. This is placed in the distinctive bottle which is stored in the fridge. Two stickers are provided: one for the fridge door and the other for inside of the front door of the premises. Paramedics, police, fire-fighters, and social services support this Lions life-saving initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the Message in a Bottle stickers.

Please contact us to if you would like to receive a Message in a Bottle
If anyone is interested in receiving one of these kits, please get in touch via our Facebook page Lions Club of Newbury or on our Twitter account @LionsNewbury
The last few months have been challenging for the club in that several fundraising events had to be cancelled and the lockdown saw a new way of holding the monthly meeting via Zoom!
Members of Newbury Lions have been doing lots of volunteering and giving support to the community during the crisis, - these people are what being a Lion is all about.
We would welcome new members especially those who have been volunteering during the Covid-19 crisis and wish to continue supporting our Community into the future.
