The Lions Young Leaders in Service Award (YLiS)

Lions Young Leaders in Service Award

Lions Young Leaders in Service Award

The Lions Club of Newbury is pleased to participate in the Lions Young Leaders in Service Award scheme (YLiS).  The scheme is part of the Lions’ clubs “Opportunities for Youth” initiative.  The Lions YLiS award recognises young people between the ages of 11-18 years old for their service to the community within a 12-month period.  The young person is provided with a ‘log book’ in which to record their service activities. These need to ‘signed off’ by a responsible adult, who can be a teacher, youth leader, parent or someone similarly responsible...

The activities are in a number of different categories – all the hours can be from the same activity or from a variety of services. Categories include service to the young, helping at school clubs, or Brownies; Rainbows, or cubs and beavers; helping the elderly, family members or the homeless and hungry. It could also include protecting our environment.  Young people may also wish to assist our local Lions club in fundraising or welfare activities. All these activities count as hours towards their award.

Last year Newbury Lions Club helped four ‘guiding young leaders’ to one gold and three silver awards and their District Commissioner is keen to re-launch the scheme this year with more candidates. One of the silver award winners has indeed been relaunched towards her Gold award. We have also received two more golds and one silver to be presented shortly to three girl guides young leaders.  We have presented these awards to the young ladies with their certificates signed by the Lions International President and also gave them their badges to wear proudly.  The certificate is of course a prized addition to their personal files and Record of Achievement File.

The Lions YLiS award is sponsored by Newbury Lions clubs. The awards available are as follows:

  • 100 hours of service = Gold Award
  • 50 hours of service = Silver Award

The benefits for young people taking part:

  • They will experience the rewards of community service
  • Achieve significant levels of community involvement
  • Receive a congratulation letter, a certificate and a badge
