About Us

Who are we?
1. We were founded in 1917 with the principal objectives to promote good citizenship, to take an active interest in the community, to serve its needs and to relieve distress.

An understanding of international relationships is also encouraged, regardless of politics, colour or creed.

2. The Lions Club of Newbury was formed in 1970 and at the moment there are some 25 members ranging in age from 30 upwards and coming from all walks of life. Currently many local businesses and companies are represented in addition to the professions.

3. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our current President John Coleman on 07513 303044.

Every month two meetings are held at The Bacon Arms: a dinner meeting on the second Thursday and a business meeting on the fourth Thursday.

What do we do and how do we do it?
4. The Lions prime aim is to serve and to help the local community and at our regular meetings we discuss how to raise the necessary funds and assess the various requests for help.

5. All the money we raise is used for charitable purposes, we do not deduct any expenses for administration.

6. During the last year we spent nearly £20,000 on various projects and good causes which included Dingley Family Trust £2750, Naomi House £1000, Mayor of Newbury’s Benevolent Fund £500, Vouchers at Christmas for families in need £1800 and £6700 on caravan holidays for local needy families as well as numerous smaller donations to local needy people for essential household goods and medical aids etc. Our aim is to spend the money here in the local community, although we do give assistance to some worthy national and Lions international projects.
